Is Pain After a Root Canal Normal?

August 13, 2024

Model of root canal procedure

If your dentist has recommended root canal therapy to save an infected tooth, you don’t have to worry about a painful procedure. Your dentist will use numbing medication to block any discomfort; however, you may experience temporary tenderness after your root canal. Here’s what you can expect when recovering from root canal therapy.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure that’s used to extract the inner layer of a tooth, called the pulp. It is necessary when an infection has reached the inside of a tooth. Without treatment, the tooth will eventually die and need to be removed.

Your dentist will use numbing medication to keep you comfortable as they remove any decay and create a small hole in your tooth to gain access to the pulp. They will use special dental instruments to remove the soft tissue and clean out the root chambers. Your tooth is sterilized and sealed with a special material called gutta-percha.

Often, a dental crown is placed over the tooth for a layer of protection. It will be made of ceramic materials to look natural.

Recovering from a Root Canal

After any numbing medications or sedatives wear off, it’s normal for your tooth to be tender for 3 to 5 days. You can manage it with an over-the-counter pain reliever. Eat soft foods that require minimal chewing. Sleeping with your pillow elevated can prevent blood from pooling in your head to reduce discomfort while you sleep. Continue to brush and floss your teeth as instructed by your dentist. Take extra care when cleaning where your crown meets the gum line.

When to Contact a Dentist

Your discomfort should improve within a few days. If your pain doesn’t subside or worsens, it’s time to give your dentist a call. If you experience fever, chills, or other symptoms of an infection, contact an emergency dentist.

Root canal therapy is a very successful procedure. Most people do not experience any complications after their treatment. If you have any concerns about discomfort or other issues after your procedure, contact your dentist.
