What Are Dental Veneers?

Imperfect teeth are extremely common. Some people are born with misshapen or crooked teeth, while others end up with damaged teeth due to physical trauma and disease. However – no matter the cause of your imperfect smile – you can likely improve its appearance with custom veneers. These are wafer-thin porcelain shells that fit over your existing teeth, perfectly concealing flaws like chips, stains, and gaps in the process.

The Process of Getting Veneers

Since no two smiles are alike, we need to consider each individual patient’s smile as well as its unique traits. With that said, the first step is always the same: the consultation. If we determine you’re a candidate for veneers after learning about your dental needs and smile goals, then we will solidify the details of your treatment plan, “prep” your teeth for veneers, and take impressions for the dental lab.

It usually takes two or three weeks for the dental lab to finalize your veneers, so we will adhere temporary ones to your teeth in the meantime. At your final appointment, we will remove your temporary veneers, bond your final ones to your teeth, and give you some helpful recommendations on how to make the results last as long as possible.

The Benefits of Veneers

Here are a few of the many reasons that patients love veneers:

  • Veneers are crafted from high-quality porcelain – Many modern veneers are made of porcelain, a preferred material for many dentists. This is because porcelain can be easily altered to match the shade of your natural teeth. With custom-made porcelain veneers, it's easy to enhance your smile discreetly - you may even forget you're wearing them.
  • Veneers are custom-made for each patient – No one will be the wiser when you're wearing custom porcelain veneers. That's because our cosmetic dentists will create yours to match your surrounding teeth perfectly!
  • The treatment process is quick – Typically, the entire veneers process can be completed in just two or three visits. That means that you can completely transform your smile in a matter of weeks!
  • Veneers can last for 10+ years – If you take good care of your smile, your veneers can last for a decade or more. So, make sure to brush consistently, floss daily, get a checkup and cleaning twice a year, and avoid unhealthy dental habits, like smoking.

Veneer FAQs

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

To ensure you enjoy the results for 10+ years, there are some foods we recommend avoiding. For example, we encourage patients to steer clear of caramel-filled candies, taffy, and other sticky foods that can tug on the veneers. Hard pretzels and other extremely crunchy snacks should also be avoided to prevent damage, like chips and cracks. In short, it’s best to maintain a well-balanced diet that’s filled with softer, more nutrient-dense foods, like cooked apples, plain yogurt, and oatmeal.

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Yes, of course! The only thing we recommend doing, if you aren’t already, is using a straw to prevent discoloration. It’s also a good idea to keep additives, like sugar, to a minimum in an effort to protect your teeth from decay.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

One study by Layton found that veneers lasted for over a decade 91% of the time. Another prominent study found that 83% lasted for 20 years. So, there’s a good chance that your new and improved smile will last for 10+ years! Of course, that does require a commitment to good habits as well as dedication to breaking bad ones. The best place to start is with your day-to-day routine, like making sure that you brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash consistently.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

The answer depends largely on your smile goals! For example, if you want a complete smile makeover, 10 or more veneers may be needed to give you the results you desire. Even if you want to fix just one chipped tooth, we may recommend 4-6 to ensure the end result is absolutely flawless. If you’re interested in finding out how many veneers you need to make your dream smile a reality, the best thing to do is schedule a consultation with Dr. Bemani. She’d be happy to provide you with an answer after learning all about your dental needs and smile goals!

How are Veneers Different Than Crowns?

Veneers and dental crowns do have some similarities, including that they are both custom-made from lifelike and high-quality materials. Outside of that, however, they couldn’t be more different. To start, dental crowns are usually used for restorative purposes while veneers are ideal for concealing common imperfections, like chips and gaps. Dental crowns also can be placed on molars while veneers are typically used on only the teeth that show when you smile. Of course, there are several other differences, including the treatment process and the price. If you want to learn more on the topic, including which one we recommend for you, then don’t hesitate to give us a call!

Can Insurance Cover Veneers?

Although there are some exceptions, dental insurance providers rarely cover the cost of elective treatments, like veneers. The good news is that we offer several financial solutions at our Catonsville dental office, including flexible financing. So, we can still help make your smile transformation affordable.
